FAQ

What is a port?

A port in computer terms, is best compared to the front door of your home. If you have an open port in your network, it is literally the same as leaving your front door wide-open when you leave the home. Ports are used for computer programs to exchange information. The most common ports in use are port 80 and port 443. These ports are used for websites to communicate with web browsers.

Can I scan my network if I use a VPN?

No. VPN's are used to disguise your Internet browsing such that a website will not be able to determine the actual IP address of your broadband network connection. In order to use our Gixey QuickScan or DetailedScan services, you must temporarily disable your VPN. You can turn it back on after you get your report.

How does Gixey earn revenue?

The Gixey service is supported by non-invasive advertisements. We curate the ads that we show to ensure the ads are relevant to network security, identity protection, smart home and IoT. We also have a subscription based API/service which provides more flexibility in the scans, reporting and remediation. Access to our API starts at $5.99 a month.

Can I scan more than one IP address?

Yes, with our B2B API service, we can provide you with an API token that will allow you to scan arbitrary IP addresses or a range. Access to our API starts at $5.99 a month. For more information Contact Us.

How long does a scan take?

Our QuickScan service is designed to be quick. We scan the top 200 most common ports known to be open on the Internet. The QuickScan and report generation should complete in about 30 seconds. A DetailedScan will take a significantly longer duration, sometimes a couple of hours. We take precautions to ensure our scans do not adversely affect the network being scanned, and as such, this requires more time to ensure a reliable result.

Can I run a detailed scan?

Soon we will have a detailed scan option. A detailed scan will scan all 65,535 TCP and 65,535 UDP ports. Until we have the detailed scan tool in place, you can Contact Us and we can run a detailed scan for a small fee.

What happens if I have an open port?

First, don't be alarmed. An open port could exist for a specific purpose. For example, some gaming consoles may open a port on a home router in order to facilitate a video stream connection while playing online games. The scan report should be reviewed. If there are open ports, chances are they can easily be closed by accessing your home routers administrative page. If you need assistance, please Contact Us. We can help assess and remediate open ports by setting up a remote session to review router configurations. We bill in 15 minute increments at $50/hr.

Can I run a QuickScan from my mobile device?

Yes, you can run a QuickScan from a mobile device. The mobile device needs to be connected to your WiFi network. To be 100% sure that your device is using your broadband connection, put your mobile device in "airplane mode" first, then enable WiFi.

What is the difference between the Gixey QuickScan and DetailedScan?

The QuickScan will scan the top 200 most common open ports across the Internet and the DetailedScan will scan all ports for TCP and UDP protocols.

Is it secure to run a scan against my home router?

Since your router is connected to the Internet, there are already many scans happening to your broadband IP address. There are thousands of hackers, scammers, worms, viruses and trojans in the wild that are always looking for open ports on the Internet. Running a targeted scan from our service is different in the sense that we enhance our scans to gather information but reduce impacts. The result of our scan is also a private report that you can download and review. With the knowledge you gain by scanning your network, you can enhance the security posture of your broadband connection to ensure you have no open ports.
